The story

The interchange with its own train wash

Van der Madeweg is the oldest of this group of stations. It opened in October 1977, when Amsterdam's first metro began running, and lies just outside the city boundary, in Duivendrecht, in the municipality of Ouder-Amstel.

Twenty years later it took on a new role. With the arrival of the Ring Line in 1997, Van der Madeweg became an interchange between line 50 and the lines to Gaasperplas and Gein, now 53 and 54. The Ring Line connects here via two single-track viaducts that won the Dutch Concrete Prize in 1995. The station was rebuilt in 2009 and 2016 and now has four tracks and four platforms at ground level.

A less familiar detail: the station has a wash plant where metro trains are cleaned. Passengers changing here can choose between three metro lines: 50, 53 and 54.
