Where does the name come from?
The station is named after the Spaklerweg, the road through the business district beside it. The origin of the street name itself was not found in the sources consulted.
The story
Where the metro lines go their separate ways
Spaklerweg was not part of Amsterdam's first metro, which began running in October 1977. The station was only added on 4 June 1982, among the offices and warehouses along the Spaklerweg. It is not underground but on an elevated track.
For passengers it is above all a transfer point. Here the lines meet that further on each go their own way: line 51 runs to Isolatorweg, line 53 to Gaasperplas and line 54 to Gein. Anyone switching from line 51 to 53 or 54, or the other way round, changes here. Towards the city all three lines run together, via Amstel and the tunnel beneath the Wibautstraat and Weesperplein, to Centraal Station.
That makes Spaklerweg a station few people choose as a destination, but one many travellers know as the place where they briefly cross the platform.
Spaklerweg station is younger than its line: it opened in June 1982, almost five years after the first metro ride.
