The first ride

On 14 October 1977 Amsterdam's first metro train ran on the East Line, from Weesperplein to the Bijlmer, where the route split towards Gaasperplas and Holendrecht. The historic centre was not yet served: trains only reached Centraal Station on 11 October 1980, through the contested tunnel under the Nieuwmarkt.

Future

To Schiphol, and a station that never came

In November 2022 the national government decided to extend the North/South Line to Schiphol and Hoofddorp, but the project is under pressure: in early 2026 it was found to be 3 to 6 billion euros short, with a decision on how to proceed expected at the end of 2026. Sixhaven station in Noord, for which the tunnel was already widened, was shelved indefinitely in January 2021.
