The story
The stadium stop that closes for concerts
Amstelveenseweg is the metro station for the Olympic Stadium, the Amsterdam UMC hospital on the VU campus and a string of offices. That makes it vulnerable on busy evenings. During a sold-out Lil' Kleine concert at the stadium in late June 2026, GVB stopped metro lines 50 and 51 from calling here from 9.30 pm, to prevent the platform from overcrowding. Concertgoers were sent to Zuid station, about a twenty-minute walk away.
The station opened in 1997 with the Ring Line. Line 51 only arrived in March 2019, when it was extended west to Isolatorweg after its Amstelveen branch closed.
In January 2012 a gas leak halted trams and metros here, as well as trains between Bijlmer ArenA and Schiphol. In August 2022 the station was reworked over three weeks: the ticket gates moved closer to the platform to create more room for transfers, the crossing to the trams and buses was simplified and the western entrance was closed. Passengers now use the eastern entrance on the VU side.
Since the 2022 rebuild the western entrance has been closed; passengers use the eastern entrance on the VU side.
