Where does the name come from?
The station is named after Overamstel, the business district in which it stands.
The story
The junction station in the business district
Overamstel sits among business premises in the work district of the same name in the south-east of the city. It opened on 1 December 1990 with the Amstelveen line. That light-rail service then ran as a metro from Centraal Station via Amstel and Spaklerweg to Overamstel, RAI and Zuid, continuing from there as a tram to Amstelveen.
In 1997 Overamstel became a junction. The Ring Line joined the existing track here, and since then lines 50 and 51 have shared the route to Zuid. At Overamstel they part: line 51 continues to Amstel and the centre, while line 50 turns off towards Van der Madeweg and Gein.
That is why this station is laid out differently from most: it has two platforms and three tracks. Passengers switching between the two lines can do so here. The station also sits exactly on the border between two fare zones, Zuid and Oost.
Overamstel has three tracks and two platforms, and lies on the border between the Zuid and Oost fare zones.
