Where does the name come from?
The station is named after the adjacent Noorderpark. This city park used to be three separate parks, the Volewijckspark, the original Noorderpark and the Florapark, divided by the Noordhollandsch Kanaal and the Leeuwarderweg and now joined into one by bridges.
The story
The high station on a deep metro line
Noorderpark is the second stop on line 52 when you set off from Noord, and the last before the metro dives under the IJ towards Centraal Station. While the city-centre stations lie up to around 26 metres underground, Noorderpark is an elevated station with two tracks. It is in the IJplein and Vogelbuurt neighbourhood and opened on 22 July 2018 together with the rest of the line.
The name comes from the large city park next door. What is now called Noorderpark was once three separate parks: the Volewijckspark, the original Noorderpark and the Florapark. They lay around the Noordhollandsch Kanaal, but the canal and the Leeuwarderweg cut them off from one another. Cycle and foot bridges now join them into one generous park.
This station also got its own artwork. Every station on the North/South Line has one, made around the theme 'from the neighbourhood to the world'. For Noorderpark the artist duo Broersen & Lukács created a work called Gates. At the opening party the day before regular service began, Saturday 21 July 2018, dancers performed here.
The Noorderpark beside the station is a merger of three parks that were once split apart by a canal and a road.
