The story

Metro to the flowers: the Floriade's terminus

Gaasperplas has been the terminus of line 53 since October 1977. Five years later its position on the edge of the city took on a special role. From 8 April to 10 October 1982 the Floriade, the international horticultural exhibition, was held around the Gaasperplas lake. Its entrance was close to the metro station, which was already in place before the event began.

After the Floriade some of the structures were removed and the site carried on as Gaasper Park. The exhibition's planetarium survived and is now used as a conference and meeting centre; its interior fittings moved to the Artis planetarium in 1988.

The station will remain a terminus, but the line is changing. Under a decision taken in November 2025, lines 50 and 53 are being combined, with line 50 running to Gaasperplas instead of Gein from December 2027. Anyone heading from here to the centre will then have to change at Van der Madeweg. Local residents were critical, because for many of them '53' is simply another word for Gaasperplas.
