The story
First the metro, then the train sixteen years later
Diemen Zuid is one of two line 53 stations that lie outside Amsterdam, in the municipality of Diemen. GVB opened the stop in 1977 as part of the very first metro line from Centraal Station to Gaasperplas.
A railway station was only added on 23 May 1993, when the southern section of the orbital railway opened, linking Schiphol via Duivendrecht with Weesp. Since then local trains to destinations including Almere, Hilversum, Utrecht and Hoofddorp have stopped here, making Diemen Zuid a place to switch from metro to train without going into the city first. Metro and trains each have their own platforms.
The station also played a part in a more recent episode: in March 2019, after a cash machine was blown up at neighbouring Ganzenhoef, line 53 ran only between Centraal Station and Diemen Zuid for hours, with shuttle buses covering the rest of the route.
After the cash machine blast at Ganzenhoef in March 2019, Diemen Zuid was briefly the end of line 53.
