Where does the name come from?
The station is named after the Holendrecht district, which in turn takes its name from the small river Holendrecht. That water meets the Waver and the Bullewijk at the Voetangel bridge.
The story
The terminus that became a hospital stop
When Amsterdam's metro opened in October 1977, Holendrecht was the end of the second branch. Anyone wanting to go further had to wait: the section to Reigersbos and Gein only opened on 27 August 1982.
In the meantime the station became the stop for the Academic Medical Center, the large hospital right next to the line. On 14 December 2008 a railway station was added too, on the Amsterdam to Utrecht line between Bijlmer ArenA and Abcoude. Since then local trains towards Utrecht, Woerden and Rotterdam have called here, and passengers can change between train and metro in the same station.
The name is older than the district. The Holendrecht is a small peat river south of the city. At the Voetangel bridge it joins the Waver and continues as the Bullewijk towards the Amstel. So two neighbouring stations on this line carry the names of the same network of waterways.
Holendrecht only got a railway station in December 2008, more than thirty years after the metro.
