Where does the name come from?
The station is named after Verrijn Stuartweg in Diemen. Verrijn Stuart is the name of a family of economists: professor C.A. Verrijn Stuart and his son G.M. Verrijn Stuart (1893-1969), a bank director and chairman of the Social and Economic Council.
The story
A metro station named after an economist
Verrijn Stuartweg is line 53's second stop in Diemen and opened in 1977 with the rest of the line. It lies between Diemen Zuid and Ganzenhoef, on the edge of two worlds: an industrial estate on one side, and on the other a former office district now converted into housing, including Bergwijkpark and Holland Park.
The name is that of the street, and the street refers to a family of economists. Coenraad Alexander Verrijn Stuart was professor of political economy in Utrecht. His son Gerard Marius Verrijn Stuart, born in The Hague in 1893, succeeded him there in 1934. He wrote mainly about credit, banking and money, was a director of the Amsterdamsche Bank from 1945 to 1954 and chaired the Social and Economic Council from 1958 to 1964. He died in Amsterdam in 1969.
In 1934 G.M. Verrijn Stuart succeeded his father as a professor in Utrecht.
