Artist Alex Fischer, who makes art from manhole covers all over the world, designed the Amsterdam 750 cover. Together with children's mayor Ruya and the children's council, he created a work of art on 6 November in which this new cover took centre stage.

This manhole cover is more than just decoration. It symbolises the infrastructure beneath the city that Amsterdammers often don't see, but on which the city depends. It recalls the sewer system that was once visible above ground, but now does its job unnoticed. Where waste water once ended up in the canals, this underground network today ensures that rainwater and waste water are drained away safely.
As a partner of the Amsterdam 750 anniversary, Waternet plays a part in this project. Besides replacing the manhole covers around the city, it also provides drinking water for Amsterdammers at major events. In this way, every new manhole cover tells a small piece of the hidden story of the city and the making of a clean and healthy Amsterdam.
